In December 2009, the Independence City Council appointed a steering committee comprised of Independence stakeholders to work with NKAPC staff in drafting new zoning regulations to implement the recommended land use plan of the Independence Community Small Area Study. The zoning regulations update process will comprise roughly a year long effort between a 19 member steering committee and NKAPC staff and will provide adequate opportunity for public input throughout the process.
This collaboration is a continuation of the visioning process which began during the small area study development.
The Independence Community Small Area Study was approved by the City of Independence on July 23, 2007, and adopted by the Kenton County Planning Commission on September 6, 2007. This study for the City of Independence was the outcome of the city’s initiative to create a community based vision and land use plan. The purpose of the land use plan is to recommend the location, extent and type of land use suitable for the “historic downtown” and adjoining areas within the study area. It also identifies the potential type of uses that can be sustained in the area and the related constraints. The small area study was a community oriented process.
Updating of the Independence Zoning Code is one of the first and most vital implementation procedures to the small area study and will aid the city as it strives towards achieving the overall vision crafted during the small area study process.
